Care miniature horses

Picture

Before buying a miniature horse

  • Check local council regulations
  • Apply for property identification code (PIC)
  • Ensure fencing is safe
  • Have either a shelter shed or thick tree area
  • Be committed to long term financial investment of care

Feeding a miniature horse

WHAT DO HORSES EAT?
  • Grass
  • Good quality grass hay (do not feed lucern hay as it has too much sugar and protein for miniature horses)
  • Treats (pony grain mix, oaten chaff, apples and carrots)

SHOULD I FEED MY MINIATURE HORSE GRAIN EVERYDAY?
No, a miniature horse should only be given graina treat unless there is a good reason to do otherwise.

DO I NEED TO FEED HAY EVERYDAY?

No, most miniature horses will eat more food that they need with a small amount of grass in the paddock.

DO MINIATURE HORSES OVER EAT?
Yes, most miniature horses will over eat and often need to be locked in a small yard and given only a small amount of food, either for a period of time or as a daily/weekly occurrence or else you risk them getting founder or colic or potentially dying.
